An Australian Award for Urban Design – 2010, was presented to BVN Architecture for Brisbane’s Inner Northern Busway (INB) last night at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

Originating from the Prime Ministers Urban Design Task Force in 1996, the Australia Award for Urban Design is given to new Australian urban design initiatives that are innovative, demonstrate excellence, and contribute to a wider appreciation of urban design.

This latest section of the Inner Northern Busway was one of Brisbane’s most complex major infrastructure projects and included extensive tunnelling, bridgeworks and two new CBD Bus Stations.

The work on the INB was carried out by the INB Hub Alliance.  BVN was a project Alliance Partner with Queensland Transport, Leighton Contractors, AECOM, Coffey Geosciences and AECOM EDAW.

According to the award jury ‘major urban infrastructure insertions are often best known/notorious for social alienation rather than for sensitivity across cultural, social and functional issues.’

In their citation the jury noted that ‘The Brisbane Inner Northern Busway enhances the appeal of public transport to all members of society and sets a benchmark for synergy between urban design and function for future infrastructure projects in Australia.’

BVN Principal, Mr Phil Tait pointed out that, the project connects an existing bus station to a new bus station under King George Square and then continues partially underground to a new bus station contiguous with Roma Rail Station, forming a vital inter-modal transport node.

He noted that these new facilities have the capacity for around 48,000 passengers daily to access public transport in a pleasant and safe environment in the centre of Brisbane.

Hosted by the Planning Institute of Australia, the Australia Award for Urban Design is also supported by the Australian Institute of Architects, Property Council of Australia, Green Building Council of Australia, Association of Consulting Engineers Australia and the Urban Design Forum.
