Mater Hospital Redevelopment

Brisbane, QLD

Completed 2008

The Mater Redevelopment Project is a $165m Public/Private initiative for the:

  • Replacement and extension of the original 1961 Mater Mothers Hospital
  • Partial refurbishment of the Mater Adult Hospital
  • Replacement of the Stanley Street Pedestrian Bridge

The building is sensitively sited in amongst a precinct of significant heritage buildings and trees, maintaining vistas to and from these and using them to enhance the new building’s sense of arrival and outlooks.
The site also enabled links to be established to the existing adult hospital that facilitated clinical efficiencies through sharing of services.

The new Mater Mothers’ Hospital is a collocated public and private health facility and a tertiary level teaching hospital providing the capacity for 10,000 births per year, making it the largest maternity hospital in Australia.

The facility includes:

  • 249 Public/Private Obstetric beds
  • 16 Delivery Suites
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Facility
  • Maternal Foetal Medicine and Ante Natal Clinics

The new Mater Mothers Hospital has a gross floor area of 14,200m2 over eight levels. The design of the Hospital is a twin skin contemporary metal and glass clad screened building which complements the masonry construction of the surrounding building. The building features extensive installation artwork with four major build-in pieces integrated into the architecture and interior design.
